The Three Lions Explore for World Cup Training Facilities Amid Concerns of Missing Out On Preferred Site to Holland.
The Football Association has dispatched officials to the US this week to inspect potential training camps for the upcoming global finals, amid growing concerns that their preferred location could be taken by the Holland.
Draw Complications Alter Arrangements
Head coach Thomas Tuchel had previously cleared an FA proposal for England to set up camp in Kansas following a pre-tournament training period in Fort Lauderdale. Yet, after last week's group stage draw, there are now fears that the Netherlands, who play their group stage matches in Kansas, will be awarded first choice on the desired facility at Sporting Kansas City—a high-performance centre operated by US Soccer.
The world governing body allocates training camps according to geographic location and world rankings if there is competition, with the draw possibly pitting the FA in competition with the Netherlands and Argentina for sites in the tournament's central region.
Exploring Alternative Sites
Given England's group fixtures set to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now reportedly investigating other locations on the east coast. The FA started its scouting process for training bases at the beginning of the year, with Tuchel and director of football John McDermott touring possible sites during the Club World Cup last summer.
Despite this advanced planning, there was always an acceptance that the official tournament draw could significantly alter their plans.
Later Round Logistics Strategy
England face the eighth most demanding group stage schedule in terms of travel distance. Topping Group L would set England on track for a round of 32 game in Atlanta, followed by potential round of 16 tie in Mexico City.
- Major Change: The FA may opt to choose to travel from match to match for the knockout stages should England progress, a significant departure from its standard protocol of maintaining a fixed tournament base.
- FIFA Encouragement: FIFA is understood to be recommending such a flexible strategy for the vast 2026 tournament.
Once the base camp is finalized, the FA will turn its attention to arranging two friendly matches in Florida at the start of June.
