My Hero Academia Cast Members Look Back on an Emotional Last Chapter: 'I am Something of a Emotional Wreck'

The beloved anime series My Hero Academia has finally concluded, leaving fans with a deep feeling of sentimentality that goes deeper than the story itself. This superhero saga has always been greater than a straightforward plot; it's a rite-of-passage story about optimism, perseverance, and the real definition of courage in a challenging world. The eighth season drives these core themes to their absolute limit, as Class 1-A confronts the fallout of the villainous uprising and a society on the edge of collapse.

For a generation of viewers, the series, which began in 2015, was their gateway to anime. From its hype-filled start to its poignant finale, it defined the genre for nearly a decade. Its end truly marks the close of an era. If you discover you are getting misty-eyed during the series finale, know that you are in good company. The English dub cast felt those exact emotions, channeling immense heart into their recordings for the closing seasons.

Saying Farewell to a Defining Chapter

"It was such a wonderful thing to see this last installment bring together all these narrative strands into this huge, emotional catharsis for these heroes," shared one actor. "And to be involved in that, in that moment, voicing the characters, is truly moving."

The difficulty of the farewell isn't solely due to the storyline. My Hero Academia became a defining chapter in the careers of its cast, and with its conclusion comes the ending of an era they have carried with them for years.

"Just as a human being, for whom this has been a daily reality for the majority of ten years, even if the dialogue I deliver isn’t particularly emotional, if it’s just Ida being typical, every time I finish a session, I become a weepy mess because it's ending. I am unprepared," confessed another seasoned performer.

Unexpected Tears from the Final Battles

Despite portraying their own signature characters, several cast members still have personal favorite characters beyond their roles, heroes whose personal journeys hit them just as hard on an personal level.

"The thing that’s surprised me so far in my viewing of the final season is how many characters are bringing me to tears," said one actor. "Whether that be the Symbol of Peace's battle at the very beginning of this season, the Erasure Hero, [even] the Shining Hero drew a tear this season!"

The performers behind the brotherly dynamic of Shoto and Dabi were also caught up in the heartbreak of their complicated dynamic, especially during the siblings' clashes across the final chapters.

A Simple Question

"Recently, a castmate delivered a line as Shoto that, really, if you heard it alone, it’s a nothingburger, it shouldn’t do anything, but he asks his brother a inquiry, and the way it was performed was so authentic and beautiful," recalled one actor. "It inspired the read I gave. I love my castmates, they’re so good at this, and I cannot stress enough that I’m so lucky."

Another actor echoed the sentiment, explaining that the seemingly simple question originates from a brief, lighthearted moment introduced earlier, one that is completed in the ending and carries immense dramatic impact.

"Jump ahead to the final season, when they’re visiting, and [the character] says, 'Wait, I need more time'," the actor said. "Yeah, it was just a way to try to reach out. It was just a line, but in context, it's everything. It's love, acceptance, remorse..."

"... and regret," added the other, voice thick with emotion. "Those brothers should’ve been able to talk like that."
