Giorgia Meloni Criticizes Union Leader for ‘Courtesan of Trump’ Remark

Giorgia Meloni has publicly denounced the leader of the country’s biggest trade union after the official referred to Meloni as a “courtesan” of ex-President Donald Trump.

Background of the Controversial Comments

CGIL leader Maurizio Landini, who heads the CGIL union, uttered the words during a television appearance on Tuesday. This came just after global figures, including Meloni, convened for a peace conference for the Middle East in Egypt.

The union leader asserted the Prime Minister of “failing to act” to advance peace in Gaza, stating her role was restricted to “playing Trump’s courtesan”. Thankfully, the Italian citizens took to the street to defend the dignity and honour of this country,” he stated.

Meloni’s Response

Via an online post this Thursday, Meloni stated that the union chief was “evidently clouded by increasing animosity (that I comprehend)”. She then publish a definition of the word “courtesan”.

“I think it is widely understood the usual interpretation given to this term, but, for the benefit of people who don’t know, I’m publishing the top definition obtained from a simple web search,” Meloni said, attaching a image that read: “Woman of loose morals, straight; substitute term, prostitute.”

Meloni also criticized her political rivals on the left, observing that over many years they had “lectured us on women’s rights” only to then criticize a woman by “labeling her a prostitute”.

Response from Landini

Reacting to Meloni’s statement, the union leader argued that there were “no sexist insults” toward Meloni and that his use of “Trump’s lackey”.

In a statement, he explained: “During a brief interview, that is publicly available, to prevent misinterpretation or misuse of the expression, I promptly explained what I meant – that the Prime Minister was trailing behind Trump, she attended Trump’s court, she served as Trump’s underling.”

Connection with the US President

The Italian leader has steadily built amicable ties with President Trump. In a public address in Egypt, Trump turned to the Italian Prime Minister – the lone woman in attendance – and referred to her as “beautiful”. “Across America, it would be politically fatal,” he said. “Still, I am willing to chance it. Do you mind if I say you are beautiful? As you are indeed beautiful.”

President Trump subsequently commended her as “a role model for everyone” in reference to the English edition of her publication, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which features a foreword by Trump’s son.

Past Events

During the summer, the Prime Minister reacted strongly after finding out that altered images of Meloni and additional notable women from Italy had been shared on a explicit platform, saying she was “disgusted”, and offering “solidarity and support to all the women who have been insulted, offended, and abused”.
