RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages down to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
