Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Responds to Trump's Warning to Relocate FIFA World Cup Matches from Boston
The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, implied that the municipality was ready for a confrontation with US President Donald Trump over his assertion that he could order FIFA to remove World Cup tournament games from Gillette Stadium, situated approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Boston.
Wu appeared on a local podcast recently to answer criticism from the Trump administration, which had described her as "radical left." President Trump had threatened that he would call the head of FIFA if Boston did not "clean up its act."
Much of it is secured by agreement so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.
She continued, "We're in a world where for drama, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... repeated warnings ... are directed at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and comply or follow along to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is targeting what Boston stands for." She concluded by stressing her support for the city, declaring, "Fully committed for our city."
Trump's Comments and FIFA Role
Recently, Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also been to the White House and presented World Cup and Club World Cup awards to Trump as gifts.
Earlier, Trump was questioned on recent disturbances in South Boston that involved a police vehicle being set on fire. Trump responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the president of the organization, who's great."
Trump added, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He might not prefer it. But he would do it very easily." The president also directly criticized Mayor Wu, stating, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"
Past Threats and Upcoming Tournament Information
President Trump has made previous comments that he would have the same conversation with Infantino about relocating games from other host cities, which are part of the 16 locations across the continent.
The United States is co-hosting the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The 48-team event is scheduled to be played from June 11 to 19 July next summer.
